Mr. M. O. Roberts came this morning in answer to my note. I showed him the picture but he concluded to take the Kaatskill brook, Indian Summer (20 x 24) instead. I was disappointed for I wanted him to have a more important work of mine. I dont think he cared for either of them but somehow seemed to feel obliged to buy something, which was unpleasant to me. Still he was very friendly and invited me to come to see him tomorrow. I made a sketch of my studio from my bed-room. I should like to paint it freely just to get the color which is very fine and rich. Dined with the Wheelers in company with the Giffords and Mrs. Custer after which we went to see Sothern as Dundreary at the Grand Opera house. The house was close and hot and we were so far from the stage we could not hear distinctly. Skinner had brought me tickets to the opera which I took over to Mary. Went home with the Wheelers to a petit souper and then home. A rainy night.
