Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Sunday, August 24, 1879, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Mr. Sawyer preached in the Methodist church from the text "We walk by faith and not by sight" to a large congregation and with great satisfaction. I finished my letter to Nett Sterling, wrote to Eastman, Church, Booth, Gifford and Downing. In the evening Maurice, Sara and I went to a temperance meeting of the law and order league at the Methodist church, at which Gus Reynolds the president spoke and also Mr. Lindsley and the pastor Mr. Willard. It has been a beautiful day.
