Came to my room this morning with a dreadful feeling of sorrow and depression. In the midst of it a Marshall called and served a legal paper on me summoning me to appear in court in a suit brought by Brentano for subscription to the "Portfolio" which I never ordered and had refused to pay. Went up and told Moore who ordered it to pay it and I would pay him as I would not recognize Brentano. He said he would do it and would come to my room at 2 but he did not come. I think however he has attended to it. Calvert called and about noon Mary called with a Miss Reynolds. Church called while they were here. Geo. Coale came to see me. Had not heard of Gertrudes death until yesterday and was greatly shocked. Gifford came in and while he was here Judge Speir came to go with me to the Westminster to see about dinner for the G. B. Club but we concluded to dine at the Down Town Club as suggested by Mr. Gordon and I wrote to him this evening to order the dinner. Called after dinner at Mr. Hoes and Mrs. Grays. Neither were in. Came to my room and wrote until nearly midnight, to Butler telling him I would go up with him on Tuesday, to Gordon and to Sara, from whom I had a letter this morning and to Weir. I had written a long letter to Weir but I concluded not to send it and wrote another. Carrie Wilkins was to have been married this evening at 6. Curiously I thought of it on the moment although I had been thinking of something else. I hope she will be happy but from what I hear I am afraid.
