Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, October 30, 1878, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution
Calvert and I were to have gone to the mountains today but it has rained. He busied himself mounting Gertrudes photograph in the character of Esther. I gave Lucy her new dress today and in looking over her bureau drawers some of her dresses seemed to like her and so a part of her that it bought my loss again most sharply to me. I have been busy all day but not a resting moment passes without thought of her. I had a letter from Downing this afternoon but he seemed to have been afraid to speak of his dear Aunt Gertrude whom he loved so well.
