Jervis McEntee Diaries

Saturday March 16, 1878

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Saturday, March 16, 1878, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Felt very badly this morning. Had a bad night with a sore throat. Went out to the Exhibition of the Society of American Artists. In spite of Cooks enthusiasm I think the work bad with few exceptions, notably Chase, some of Alden Weirs sketches and a picture by Sargent. I believe in the old instructs, ideas, sentiment and not execution. To the breakfast to Taylor at the Century at which Mr. Bryant presided. A thoroughly Century affair and very enjoyable. Sat near Taylor between Mr. Pinkerton and Mr Stout. My cold is very bad but in spite of it I enjoyed the occasion greatly.
