Jervis McEntee Diaries

Tuesday January 22, 1878

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Tuesday, January 22, 1878, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Went home Saturday and found Gertrude suffering from a bad tooth and a swelled face which made her ill. Came back Monday feeling very depressed. Bowyer urged me to go to Wallachs with him to see "My Awful Dad" which I did rather against my will as I was not in the mood for the theatre. The weather is warm and dispiriting. Booth came today and I worked on Ruy Blas advancing it considerably. Have felt less depressed today but not cheerful. I owe a few little bills which worry me. Rock called for his but he was very polite. It kills me to have my credit suffer. I wrote a note to Mrs. Pychouska asking her if she thought it adviseable for me to ask Mr. Dodd to come and see my new picture. I feel I ought to use all legitimate means to try to sell it but I would not do this if I were independent. Called at Mrs. Grays but she was not at home. Called on the Platts. Came home and wrote Gertrude as I did last night. Bowyer and Downing dined with me. Julia stood up today and they hope to take her home this week.
