Jervis McEntee Diaries

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Friday, April 27, 1877, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Hall and I went to the Bower Theatre Wednesday evening. The play was Uncle Toms Cabin and was too good to be amusing. The Topsy was a colored girl born a slave and she acted the part capitally. Last night the Artists Mutual Aid Society met at my studio to make arrangements for a contribution to Irvings family. After transacting some business we adjourned to meet at Irvings Studio next Tuesday evening when some of Irvings friends who have expressed a wish to cooperate with us will meet us there. Had a letter from Booth a day or two ago in which he seemed to be anxious that I should finish the character pictures. I wrote him yesterday telling him I am at work on them. I am so much interrupted however that I do not accomplish much, and besides am in the dentists hands.
