Jervis McEntee Diaries

Friday September 1, 1876

Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Friday, September 1, 1876, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

We returned from our visit to the Bachelders on Saturday last 26th Aug. We had a very pleasant visit at their sea side cottage and also visited Mr & Mrs Sawyer for a few days. I came home with a boil on my right fore finger and one on my breast from which I have been suffering now two weeks but am slowly getting better. We stopped in N.Y. a day on our way to Boston to see the loan collection of pictures at the Academy and went on by the Stonington boat. We returned by the Hoosac Tunnel & Troy. Aunt Rockafeller died on Monday Aug 28th after suffering a long time. While we were gone Rorra was taken to the Insane Asylum at Pokeepsie and the discovery made that he had been using the funds of the companies for which he was agent. Girard has given up his place with Hoe & Co in N.Y. and came back here to go into the Insurance business with Dewitt Rosa. I very much regret it and fear he has made an unwise move. I came back to anxieties and worries. Maurice gets worse & worse in his habits and we as usual are in need of money. I am already looking forward to the time to go to New York to earn some more money.
