Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, May 3, 1876, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Went home on Saturday, and attended the performance of the boys & Julia in the evening which went off well but before a small audience. Came down Sunday evening on the Baldwin with Bowyer. At Newburgh Brown & Ward came on board, Brown and I came to my room and breakfasted Monday morning and then took the 9.30 limited Express for Philadelphia. Hicks & Huntington went with us. Staid at the Continental and went at 4 P.M. in the American department Memorial Hall. Were busy all day Tuesday and came back Tuesday evening. One of Bierstadts pictures was rejected, the "Spring in California". I voted to admit all his pictures although I confess if I had voted on their merits I would not have voted for all. They looked particularly poor and certainly can do him no credit with intelligent people. We will probably have to go on one more. Whittredge and Sartain are by the ears and quarrel all the time and it seemed to me were doing to work. Brown staid with me last night and went home this morning.
