Went down towards the Battery this morning on the Elevated Railway. Crowds of people travel on it. Walked about a while, rode up to Canal St. and walked home through South Fifth Avenue. Went to work and worked all day. Wrote to Lambdin that I was going to give a small picture to be sent to the Annual Exhibition and sold for the benefit of the Mortgage fund of the Academy. Lydig Suydam called with some Boston ladies, one a Miss Ticknor. Mr. Ludington called also Fitch who told me of the birth of a son now nearly a week old. Albert Crane called also. This evening I dressed myself and called on Mrs. Taylor. Mrs. Folles and a friend came in while I was there. From there went to call at Frank Week's but they were out so being near the Stoddards I called there for the first time this winter. Mrs. S. was hardly presentable but came in the room. Poor Dick was bathing his lame wrist. I chatted with them for half an hour as naturally as possible and then came home to the relief of both of them I imagine. Wrote to Gertrude. The weather continues delightful thus far we have had no snow.
