Jervis McEntee Diary Entry, Tuesday, May 27, 1873, from the Jervis McEntee papers, 1850-1905, in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution

Tuesday, May 27, 1873- We did some packing today and at 3 o'clock took a carriage and went over to the foot of 33rd St. E. R. where we took the boat at 4. for Mr. DeForests place on Long Island at Cold Spring Harbor. Mr. DeForest was on board. The day grew somewhat threatening and we arrived there in a sort of a fog. They have a charming country house and live delightfully. Wednesday was very bright and warm. We rode to Oyster Bay in the forenoon and took a short ride in the afternoon. Mr. DeForest was obliged to go to town. We returned Thursday morning having had a delightful visit. Lockwood his son is going to the Adirondacs on Monday for a month with his Uncle Mr. Francis Weeks. When I reached my studio I found a very friendly note from Dr. Coch in which he said he had spent all the money he could afford this spring for Art, but thanked me for writing him and saying he would like to have one of my pictures. So ends that venture. It is very warm and we will be glad to get into the country. I found a letter from Sara in which she gives us sad news about Maurice. I immediately sat down and wrote him an encouraging letter and I hope he will take a fresh start.
