Saturday, Dec 13, 1873- My mother returned this evening from New York with Girard having bought her carpet which is to come next week. I painted in the forenoon but in the afternoon had a head ache and spent the most of it with my feet in hot water. It has been a very rainy day. I am reading "Les Trois Mousquetaires" and am much interested in the story, but what an immeasurable distance between such writing and Remans "Vie de Jesus".
