    Benefit: the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art Annual Benefit

    October 30, 2008 - The Archives saluted the careers of artists Joel Shapiro and Ellen Phelan, and art dealers Joan T. Washburn and Virginia M. Zabriskie with the Archives of American Art Medal at our annual New York Benefit. In addition, the Lawrence A. Fleischman Award for Scholarly Excellence in the Field of American Art History was presented to Neil Harris.

    Eighth Annual Raymond Lecture
    with Jerry Saltz

    April 2008 - Senior art critic for New York Magazine Jerry Saltz presented the Archives' eighth annual Raymond Lecture with his talk, "Overplayed, Just Getting Started, or Out of Gas: An art critic looks at where art is, what the market is doing to it, and how art is and is not fighting back."

    Saltz captivated his audience of collectors, critics, scholars, and art enthusiasts through his animated style of lecturing, complete with slides, colorful stories, and audience participation.
