The Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, is pleased to announce that Tanya Sheehan will serve as guest editor of the Archives of American Art Journal for 2016.

Dr. Sheehan is Associate Professor in the Department of Art at Colby College, where she teaches American and African American art history. She is the author of Doctored: The Medicine of Photography in Nineteenth-Century America (2011), editor of Photography, History, Difference (2014), and co-editor of Photography and Its Origins (2015). She has recently contributed essays to The Image of the Black in Western Art Vol. V (2014), the journal American Art (fall 2014), and the Blackwell volume A Companion to American Art (2015). As a research associate at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University, she is completing a book that explores ideas about race in American visual humor.

Recently re-launched to incorporate peer-reviewed articles, the Archives of American Art Journal covers the history of the visual arts in the United States from the eighteenth century to the recent past. The Journal seeks to enrich our understanding of art history and visual culture by publishing original research based in part on the vast holdings of the Archives of American Art.  It aims to showcase new approaches and out-of-the-box thinking about primary sources.  First published in 1960 as the Archives of American Art Bulletin, the Archives of American Art Journal is the longest-running scholarly journal devoted to the history of American art.

Beginning in fall 2015, the Journal will be distributed by the University of Chicago Press. The benefits of this arrangement include increased visibility through consistent, broad-based marketing and promotion, the introduction of a robust online edition and an e-book edition, and new subscription categories.

Dr. Sheehan will develop journal content, including a fall 2016 issue focusing on African American art to complement the opening of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture.

The Archives of American Art Journal is published twice a year and welcomes submissions at any time. Guidelines for submissions are available at Write for the Journal.
