Sketchbooks contains many pencil, ink, watercolor, and pastel sketches from Calapai's travels, including trips to Kilimanjaro, Tanzania and Italy. These sketches include cityscapes, statue and architecture studies, and scenes from everyday life. Drawings in other sketchbooks were inspired by more domestic travels, such as Rockwell Kent's dairy farm in upstate New York, the Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami, Florida, and Deer Isle, Maine. Other subjects include landscapes and figure studies, particularly of street vendors and people seated in waiting rooms, on buses, or on park benches.
