The records of commercial art galleries at the Archives of American Art represent a tremendous resource for researchers and scholars. Documentation held by the Archives includes exhibition catalogs, promotional materials, photographs, inventories, audio-visual materials, correspondence between gallery owners, artists and patrons, and financial records.
The papers are supplemented by Oral History Interviews with some of America's most notable gallery owners and dealers.
Researchers should note that some of the Archives' collections of gallery records have been digitized almost in their entirety, including the Macbeth Gallery Scrapbooks Online, and the Downtown Gallery Records Online.
A preliminary version of this guide was created in 2003; it was updated and enhanced in 2008 with support from the Terra Foundation for American Art.
