Arte Del Varrio (later Varrio Art)

Three issues of Arte del Varrio (later Varrio Art) are found in the file Ybarra-Frausto labeled "Cholos - Arte del Barrio."

In the magazine's inaugural issue, the publishers state "we vow to present...the arts from las calles [streets], las pintas [prisons], las escuelas [schools]...this is us."

Varrio Art's large format presented artwork submitted by barrio (neighborhood) youth. Images such as tattoos, graffiti, ranfla (a car, usually refers to a low rider), drawings, and stylized, highly mannered images of cholas and cholos (Chicano barrio youths) were prominent.

Some repeated symbols include roses, hearts, crucitas, (small crosses), teardrops, La Virgen de Guadalupe, skulls, and references to gangs and pinto sub-cultures.
