The Tomás Ybarra-Frausto Research Material on Chicano Art contains one 1971 issue of the magazine Con Safos (vol. 2, no. 7). The dominant credo of this magazine was the belief that artistic practice should reflect the concerns of the urban working class. Its view was that the authentic and primal source of Chicano expression could be encountered in the history, language, and lifestyle of the barrio. Featured were barrio caricatures drawn by street artists, poetry and prose, and photographic portfolios by Oscar Castillo with layouts by artists such as Gilberto Sanchez Lujan. |
