Visual Thinking:
Sketchbooks from the Archives of American Art

JULIO DE DIEGO (1900-1979), a muralist, printmaker, theatrical designer, and painter, was born in Madrid and studied there and in Paris before coming to the United States in 1924. He was the third husband of Gypsy Rose Lee. During their marriage, from 1948 to 1955, the couple toured the country with a carnival group called the Royal American Shows. Lee performed her popular striptease and de Deigo presented his Surrealist-inspired performance "What Art Your Dreams?" This sketchbook, dating from 1950 to 1953, when de Diego was in New York, includes his notes, drawings, a few newspaper clippings, and bold illustration ideas for such products as Cloak and Dagger Rum and The Guitar Review.
