ARTHUR CUMMING'S (1847-1913) sketchbook is a record of his student work at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1886. Included are delicate drawings of flowers and bees, as well as wallpaper designs and samples representing a late-nineteenth-century taste for organic decoration.

BIO/HISTORICAL NOTE: Cumming, an English immigrant, studied under Robert Swain Gifford (painter, 1840-1905) and taught for several years at the Swain Free School (now known as the Swain School of Design) in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
SUMMARY: One sketchbook containing drawings of flowers, insects and wallpaper designs.
RESTRICTIONS: Patrons must use microfilm copy.
PROVENANCE: The sketchbook was purchased by the donor from art dealer Samuel Murray of Wilbraham, Massachusetts.
