Visual Thinking:
Sketchbooks from the Archives of American Art

CLAUDIA DE MONTE'S (b. 1947) sketchbook from 1977 is evidence of her early fascination with series, repetition, humor, and her own identity. In it she filled whole pages with multiple Del Monte logos (an obvious play on her name and the idea of the artist's name as trademark), hearts, and Salada tea tags. The octagonal tea tags, though uniform in design, carry unique affirmations such as "He who goes out on a limb gathers the fruit."
