GEORGE WASHINGTON (1732-1799)

U.S. President 1789-1797
Selections from the Archives of American Art

From the Robert Graham Collection of Artists' Letters, 1783-1874, a letter (3 p.) from painter Benjamin West (1738-1820) to his student Charles Willson Peale (1741-1872).

A native of Pennsylvania, West settled in England in 1762. He became one of the best known painters and teachers of his time. One of his American students, Charles Willson Peale, had written to West after the Revolution to ask if there might be a market in England for a portrait of General Washington. In his reply, West congratulates "you and my Countrymen in general" for their fortitude and wisdom in the war. He looks forward to the painting of Washington which Peale is sending, and asks for drawings of the uniforms worn by the American army. 3 pages, 22.5 x 18.7 cm.
