Vivika Heino Interview Excerpt (4:52 min:sec)

VIVIKA HEINO's (1910–1995) ceramic glazes and her ardent professionalism were her greatest gifts to her students. In this excerpt from a 1981 interview conducted by Elaine Levin, Heino discusses her graduate studies at Alfred University in1942. She also comments on her attraction to Japanese pottery and how she developed new glazes at Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts), in Los Angeles, where she taught from 1955 to 1963. Later in the conversation, her husband, potter Otto Heino, affirms their commitment to individualism.
