DOROTHY NEWKIRK STEWART
(1891-1955)

As a painter, muralist and printmaker working in Santa Fe, New Mexico , Dorothy Newkirk Stewart (1891-1955) created works of art of on both small and large scales. The small images, such as the handful of handmade prints contained in The Handbook of Indian Dances,  still create a large visual impact, with bright colors and abstracted shapes that recreate the energy and mood of the dance, whether mysterious or whimsical. Repeated forms that disappear into the background, or linger through the foreground, remind the viewer of the pulsating rhythms and tempos the dancers incorporate into their movements.
