WILLARD LEROY METCALF
(1858-1925)

While known primarily as a master of landscape painting, Willard Leroy Metcalf (1858-1925) had a remarkable gift for capturing human expression. Between 1881 and 1883 Metcalf spent time in the Southwest painting the Zuni Indian tribe. This watercolor sketch of Kesh pah hai, from one of the early sketchbooks of this period, reveals a sensitive spirit.
