Harrison Cady Sketchbook, ca. 1943
Illustrator and painter W. Harrison Cady (1877-d.) was known for charming illustrations of Thornton W. Burgess's children's stories, particularly The Adventures of Peter Cottontail. For seven decades Cady's illustrations appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, and other publications. Beginning in 1896, he spent his summers in the seaside village of Rockport, Massachusetts. This sketchbook, dated 1943, includes his picturesque scenes of Rockport, as well as several amusing sketches of artists painting en plein air. In 1921, Cady helped found the Rockport Art Association to support local artists.

25 p. Both front and back covers are intact; pages are in very good condition and spiral bound. Graphite, crayon, pen, and watercolor were used to make sketches. Many of the sketches are detailed and colored. Images are of Rockport, Massachusetts, a small fishing village where Cady spent each summer beginning in 1896. Images include: scenes of fishing boats in the water or docked with houses in the background, a family eating dinner outside, a couple walking past the Coast Guard station at night, two people fishing from a dock, a group of artists leaving for a day of painting, three different sketches of artists painting, a number of images of the everyday life of a quiet neighborhood, numerous studies of men smoking pipes, and the judging of a community baby contest.
