Millet (1846–1912) was a prominent figure in the art world on both sides of the Atlantic in the decades just before and after the turn of the 20th century. He was a cultural advisor to two presidents, and by the late 1880s was a leading member of the American expatriate community in England. His diaries vividly describe his travels around the world and his friendships with such figures as John Singer Sargent, Edwin A. Abbey, Henry James, and Mark Twain. Millet’s extraordinary life ended with the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
