Church (1826–1900) and Heade (1819–1904), two of the most significant American landscape painters of the 19th century, shared a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building in New York. Church, writing from Hudson, New York, sends instructions to hold his mail and includes a sketch of a postman overwhelmed by a large box of mail.
