In the last quarter of the 19th century the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts was one of the most prestigious and influential art schools in America. After the departure of Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anshutz (1851–1912) was among its best-known instructors. He taught there for nearly thirty years and many of his students became major figures in American art. The bare-headed man in the center of this photograph is Robert Henri.
