Digging for Clay in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution - Dorothy Weiss Gallery
Dorothy Weiss Gallery Records
The Dorothy Weiss Gallery, founded by Dorothy Weiss in San Francisco in 1984, specialized in contemporary clay and glass with an emphasis on non-functional, sculptural work. The records document the gallery's relationships with more than three hundred artists including such clay luminaries as Rudy Autio, Annette Corcoran, Ruth Duckworth, Michael Lucero, Beverly Mayeri, and Robert Turner. There are also files on Weiss's recurrent "Teapot Invitational" exhibitions. In 2000, Weiss closed the gallery, and donated her records to the Archives two years later. This selection of documents includes letters, sketches, and printed material from artists Rudy Autio, Jun Kaneko, Annette Corcoran, and others, as well as information concerning Weiss's popular "Teapot Invitationals."
