| Description: | Identification on accompanying note (typewritten): "William Zorach (1887- ). Influenced by Matisse in his early years, Zorach worked as a painter through phases of abstraction ism [sic] and cubism. In 1920 he became a sculptor. His work is unmistakably marked by the warly influences, but has moved steadily in the direction of a romantic realism in the great American tradition. A staunch advocate of direct carving, he has recently moved from this position into one of greater latitude toward handling the material of the sculptor." |
