    Identification on accompanying label (typewritten): George Luks (1867-1933). Luks was known to his friends as an actor, an entertaining liar, and a talented draughtsman. Comic strip artist and war correspondent before turning to serious art, Luk's admiration for Franz Hals influenced his painting.
