Collection Summary: Research material used in Perine's book CHOUINARD: AN ART VISION BETRAYED (1985) including: Chouinard catalogs, 1937-1969, and catalogs for the California Institute of the Arts, 1965-1984; notes and preliminary writings for the book, including an annotated table of contents and a bibliography; floor plans of the Institute; material concerning the lawsuit brought against the board of trustees in an attempt to prevent the closing of the school; 158 photographs of Nelbert Chouinard, classes, students and buildings; and 27 audio cassettes of interviews of 52 artists and staff, some with partial transcripts.
The faculty interviewed by Perine about Chouinard include Robert Irwing, Louis Danziger, Phil Paradise, Dalzell Hatfield, Emerson Woelffer, Tim Clark, Herbert Jepson, and Edith Head. Partial transcripts exist for interviews with Marc Davis, Elin Waite, Marvin Rubin, Rex Brandt, Harry Diamond, Watson Cross Jr., Dwain Houser, William Moore, James Normile, Alex Hovsepian, and Phil Paradise.
Biographical/Historical Note: Artist, art instructor, b. 1922; d. 2004. Was a student and later a teacher at Chouinard Art Insitute, founded 1912, closed 1972. In 1962 Chouinard and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music became member schools of the California Institute of the Arts.
