Collection Summary: The bulk of the collection consists of research material relating to painter John Singleton Copley (1738-1815) compiled by Jules D. Prown. Included is correspondence between Prown and individuals or institutions regarding works of art attributed to Copley, many with corresponding photographs of the works. Also included are correspondence, photographs, notes, and writings relating to Copley's works of art, as well as index cards for individual paintings by Copley, and biographical information relating to Copley's portrait sitters. A small portion of research material (1.0 linear ft.) includes research files on artist Benjamin West, and teaching files and lectures on American art, including subject files on various artists and material culture.

Biographical/Historical Note: Jules D. Prown is a Paul Mellon Professor Emeritus of the History of Art, Yale University, New Haven, Conn. Prown is an authority on American art, especially John Singleton Copley, and material culture.
