Collection Summary: Correspondence, photographs, manuscripts, and printed material relating to Jan van der Marck's career as a curator and arts administrator.
Correspondence is with artists, galleries, museums, and publishers regarding the production of exhibitions and the publication of articles, catalogs, and art historical monographs. Much of the correspondence between van der Marck and artists is personal. Other correspondence is professional and relates to the internal workings of the various institutions with which van der Marck was associated during his career.
Photographs are personal and include van der Marck at openings or outings with friends and professional acquaintances. This series also contains a limited number of slides and art reproductions used by van der Marck for teaching, writing, and reference. Manuscripts include both typescript and handwritten documents written by van der Marck preparatory to his many published articles and monographs. Printed material consists of gallery announcements, small catalogs, and clippings. Like the photographs, this material is interspersed throughout the correspondence and manuscripts series.
Biographical/Historical Note: Jan van der Marck (1929- 2010) was a curator and arts administrator in Detroit, Mich., Chicago, Ill., and Miami, Fla.
Donated 2011 by Sheila Van der Marck, van der Marck's widow.
