Description: Cole writes to an unidentified recipient (addressed only as "my dear Sir") who has asked about an engraving by J.H.E. Whitney. Cole describes the tools Whitney would have used, and the tools that he himself prefers for wood engraving, including illustrations of different types of burins (he refers to the different shapes as: lint tools, splitstickers, and lozenge).
