Description: Identification on verso (typewritten): MARINE COMBAT ARTIST WOUNDED ----- Private Paul R. Ellsworth, USMC, 19, of 131 North Second Street, DeKalb, Illinois, was the first Marine combat artist to suffer wounds in action during the present war. He was injured when Jap planes bombed press headquarters in the Torokiama area on Bougainville. In this photo, taken recently, he is shown working with a crude easel built from an ammunition box and meagre supplies of paint. He has sent many drawings and water colors from the South Pacific to Marine Corps Headquarters depicting the life and activities of Marines overseas.
