Description: Inman, writing from New York to his patron James McMurtrie in Philadelphia, discusses various matters concerning his work and incidentally asks McMurtrie to find for him the best canvas obtainable in Philadelphia and send it on as he has no time to "run about after canvass." He describes his portrait of James M. Campbell, formerly of Philadelphia, and considers the composition of a painting in progress of a bishop.
Formerly one folded sheet, has detached into two pieces.

Purchased 1956 from Albert Duveen.
