Collection Summary: Personal and business letters of the owner, Henri (Henrietta Ehrsam); financial material; photographs of installations, openings and exterior views of Henri Gallery in Alexandria and Washington D.C.; printed matter; files on artists containing biographies, letters, some slides and photographs of artwork, reviews, and clippings; and 114 oversize posters. Among the artists are William Christenberry, Gene Davis, Thomas Downing, Mary Beth Edelson, Mimi Herbert, Colin Greenly, Ed McGowin, Howard Mehring, Tom Nakashima, Graeme Outerbridge, Martin Puryear, Italo Scanga, Yuri Schwebler, Joe Shannon, Robert Stackhouse, and May Wilson.
ADDITION: Records, ca. 1958-1978, including resumes; artists' statements; correspondence, photographs and slides of works of art; price lists, invoices, consignment sheets, and other financial records; exhibition catalogs, announcements, clippings, and other printed material.
Biographical/Historical Note: Art gallery, Washington, D.C. Operated by Henrietta Ehrsam (d. 1996), known as Henri. Est. 1957 in Alexandria, Virginia, moving ten years later to 21st and P Sts. in Washington, D.C. Among the artists exhibited were the painters of the Washington Color School, and young artists.
Donated 1980-1981 by Henri Ehrsam, and 1996 by her daughter Helen S. Schnoebelen.
