Biographical/Historical Note: Painter and educator; Providence, R.I.. Born in Marquette, Michigan, Downing was educated at Harvard University and at the University of Chicago. A member of the College Art Association and the Providence Art Club, he taught at the University of Chicago and at Brown University. His wife, Antoinette Downing, is an architectural historian.
Donated 1981 by Mrs. George E. Downing, widow of George Downing.
