    Series Descriptions

    Series 1: Alphabetical Files, 1950s-2006 (Boxes 1-24, 58; 24.0 linear ft.)

Alphabetical files consist of correspondence, photographs, printed material, some stray personal financial records, and even a few audio cassettes. It appears that Ms. Lippard had sorted practically all incoming item into very rough alphabetical order. It is very likely that files in each of the subseries titled "Artists/Other Individuals," "Galleries/ Institutions/Groups," and "Subject Files" were segregated by Archives of American Art staff during preliminary processing of the first accrual of Lippard's papers. Some of the materials remain unorganized as noted below and may include overlapping materials; these have been roughly sorted alphabetically or chronologically by decade.

This series is arranged into 5 subseries. These files in 1.4 are still to be merged and are mostly unorganized. The files in 1.5 are also unorganized.

    Series 2: Writings, 1960s-1990s (Boxes 24-35, 58; 12.0 linear ft.)

Among the writings are manuscripts for books, with related correspondence, notes, and research materials. Miscellaneous writings include articles, columns, essays, reviews, endorsements, etc. Also included are notes and texts for lectures and speeches. Between 1970 and 1976, Ms. Lippard's speaking engagements at art schools were confined to answering written questions submitted by the audience; her papers include an extensive selection of these questions. In addition, there are files on symposia and conferences that include notes and texts for Lippard's contributions. This series includes transcripts and notes for artist interviews with Lippard, and interviews of artists conducted by her. Also, there are transcripts and notes of panel discussions, edited by Lippard for publication.
