    Biographical Information [+]

Elizabeth Eyre de Lanux was born on March 20, 1894, the eldest daughter of Richard Derby Eyre (1869-1955) and Elizabeth Krieger Eyre (d. 1938). As Elizabeth's mother suffered from depression, spending extended periods in a Summit, New Jersey sanitarium, the responsibilities of parenthood fell largely to Richard Eyre, a successful patent lawyer. The Eyres traced their origins to prominent Philadelphia shipbuilders. Richard Eyre was born in Florence, Italy. His father, Wilson Eyre (1823-1901), served as United States Consul in Venice during the period of Italian unification. Elizabeth's aunt was the sculptor Louisa Lear Eyre (1872-1953), and one of her uncles was Philadelphia architect Wilson Eyre (1858-1944). Elizabeth's sister, Louisa Lear Eyre Norton (1896-1966), entered M.I.T. in 1920, receiving the Ph.D. in Physics in 1924. READ MORE

    Series Descriptions

    Series 1: Diaries, 1923-1988 (boxes 1-2, 2 linear ft, 64 vols.)

This series contains 64 volumes of Eyre de Lanux's diaries spanning the years 1923 to 1988. There are no diaries for the period 1927 to 1947, with the exception of two small notebooks (1938, 1945). The diaries resume in 1948, with Eyre's arrival in Rome, and continue, with multiple volumes for most years, until the late 1980s when her eyes failed. As a whole, the diaries will frustrate the biographer seeking to clarify major events in her life. Moreover, her handwriting is difficult to read, and she moves from one language to another within entries, employing English, French, and Italian. Eyre de Lanux used her diaries to record her impressions of the world rather than to enumerate daily activities. READ MORE

Series 3: Writings, 1914-1992, undated (boxes 7-8, 1.4 linear ft.)

Series 3, Writings, contains Eyre's correspondence with literary agent Pamela Bol (1991-92), who was attempting to interest publishers in Eyre's short stories, as well as a number of rejection letters from editors (1954-92). It also includes excerpts of the articles she wrote from 1922 to 1924 for Town and Country magazine. These are filed with several manuscript drafts, supplying evidence that Eyre and Pierre may have collaborated on the Letters of Elizabeth column. It is clear from the manuscripts that Pierre edited her writing; on occasion, he may have written the column himself. Also present in Series 3 is Eyre's manuscript draft of her memories of Barney's literary salon, written for "A Natalie Barney Garland" and published in the Spring 1975 issue of The Paris Review. The remainder of Eyre's writings are arranged into Books, Poetry, and Short Stories. Illusions of Identity, a book which was never published, is represented by a draft proposal. There is correspondence from Eyre to various museums requesting photographs for the book, which was to have included a preface by Ray Bradbury. Eyre's poetry consists of typescript drafts (1920-39, undated), a small notebook with typescripts pasted in (1914-17), and a copy of The Transatlantic Review for October 1924, which printed her poem, Rue de la Gaité.
