Collection Summary: Papers of Eugene (Gene) Thomason relate primarily to work as an art instructor and his association with social realist painter George Luks. Included is a photograph of an art class at the school where Luks and Thomason taught, circa 1926-1927. Also found is a photograph of Thomason's painting of Luks, and printed material about Thomason, including catalogs, clippings, and newsletters.
Biographical/Historical Note: Eugene Thomason (1895- 1972) was a painter; Nebo, North Carolina. Thomason was born in Blacksburg, S.C. and raised in Charlotte, N.C.. Through the support of his father's employer J. B. Duke, Thomason studied in New York City at the Art Students League, and later operated an art school on E. 22nd St., New York, N.Y., with George Luks.
Photographs and some clippings donated circa 1975 by Mrs. Eugene Thomason, Thomason's widow. Materials on reel 960 were lent for microfilming by Mrs. Eugene Thomason.
