Wednesday, Dec 19, 1888 Cold and bracing. I went to Van [?] and bought some Xmas presents and to the Palais Royal and ordered a frame for a print for Marion. I went to Wilmurts to see why my frame for Husteds picture had not come and found his place closed on account of the death of his wife. Husted from whom I received a note yesterday came today and said he was delighted with his picture which I am to send him Friday and for which he is to pay me $300 and the frame besides. Have been painting all day on Mr. Welles picture. Wrote Mrs. Darley from whom I had a letter on Monday. Went to the reception of the ladies Art Association [?] on a top floor in 14th St. A crowded room lighted by kerosene lamps with a vile atmosphere, not a soul I knew and depressing art, so far as I was able to see. Verestschagin was there. Not an attractive looking man if I were not mistaken in the person.
