Thursday, May 6, 1886 Worked on my picture but it does not please me. The fact is I am jaded and tired of painting until I get some fresh impressions. A little encouragement would be the best stimulus. I have been here since Nov. 16th have worked very faithfully and painted a number of pictures. I have sold only three pictures during all that time. One out of the fall exhibition of the Academy and two to E. S. Auchincloss. One would think after having been here for thirty years and having now something of a name in Art that there would be more than two people in this great city who would want something of mine. I wish I were not obliged to paint for a living, for year by year I am more and more forcibly admonished how precarious a dependence it is.
