Monday, Sept 26, 1881 A very hot day. We did little but sit quietly and talk over a thousand things. Downing came last night. Booth talked very frankly with me yesterday concerning him and Edwina. They seem very fond of each other and I am going to talk with Downing the first opportunity for Booth told me he was more than satisfied with Downing and thinks only of Edwinas happiness. A memorial service for the President was held at the Baptist church today at the house of the funeral in Cleveland. Only my father and mother went. Booth and Edwina left by the 7 o'clock train. They meant to have gone this morning but wisely concluded to wait until evening as it was so very hot.
