Tuesday, May 17, 1881 My picture came home from the Academy today. Thats the encouragement a leading American Artist gets who paints original pictures. Have decided to go home for the summer this week and have got some of my things together. Painted on dear Gertrudes portrait and am getting it better. Called to see Mrs. Carter about Miss Ford but she was not in. Miss Leggett sent me a note saying she could not think of any thing for her. I presume she will have to stay here and starve. I wish I had some money I would buy her some clothes and send her to the country. Calvert and I went up to Eastman Johnsons and spent the evening. He seems to have plenty to do and is flourishing from his portraits. He sent Mrs. Pullman to see my picture at the Academy and recommended her to buy it. She went with Phil. Said she liked it very much but "had a picture very like it" I guess not.
