Tuesday, Jan 4, 1881 Painted on my picture. It was dark in the morning but have had a good light nearly all day. Skinner came about 2 o'clock and asked me to go with him to the Union Square Theatre to see Clara Morris in "Miss Multon" an adaptation of East Lyme in which I have seen Lucille Western and Modjuska. It is a harrowing play and was acted with a certain realistic power but it has left a painful impression on me and I have felt sad and depressed since. I spent this evening with Mary all the rest of them having gone to their sketching club. My sketches and drawings went to the Art Students League for their reception tonight. I did not go. Now at 10 oclock when I came in it is snowing hard and it looks as thought it would continue. I would like to be in the country to see this storm. A letter from Mr. Bates of Providence who wants to know if I will paint him a small picture of the one I painted up at home based on one of my Vermont sketches. I hear nothing from the Union League people and am afraid that has fallen through.
