The Jervis McEntee Diaries - March 18, 1879

Diary Entry:

[Newspaper funeral notice of Bayard Taylor attached] A letter from Mrs. Sawyer this morning and one from Mr. Bates of Providence wanting me to send my little picture to him to see if he will buy it. Painted on Gertrudes portrait. I think I have the upper part of the head and the eyes like her but the mouth and lower part are unsatisfactory. Mr. Capen, President of Tufts College came to see me and made a long visit. We talked of Gertrude whom he appreciated and admired very much. He struck me as a very refined and thoughtful man and I enjoyed his visit exceedingly. This evening went up to see the Stedmans. The Morses were there and so I could not say all I wanted to but I stayed after they went and they told me all about their trip down to Cedarcroft. Mrs. Stedman was ill and Stedman looked worn out. An invitation from Mr. Butler to go to his country home next Saturday or to spend Sunday with him which I will accept if I hear my father is getting on tomorrow.
