Spent the forenoon at Merritts wagon shop getting the trestle-trees for the flag staff made. This afternoon have been looking over the old letters. It has been a grey, chilly day promising snow but this evening it is warmer. I awoke very early this morning. I think of Gertrude the moment I am conscious and there comes such a sharp pang when I realize all. We speak of her the last thing at night and generally go to bed in tears and the morning brings her to me the moment I awake.
